How crypto turns into money on a card
You cannot send Bitcoin straight to a bank card. A card works with regular money, while coins live on a blockchain. So there is always an exchange in between: the crypto is sold, and euros, dollars or another currency arrive on the card.
The only real differences are who does the exchange and how much they charge. That is why there are several ways to withdraw.
Three ways to convert crypto to cash
An exchange. You sell your coins on a crypto exchange and withdraw the money to your card or account. Rates are usually good. Each exchange has its own withdrawal rules, limits and fees, though, and the interface takes some learning.
A P2P trade. You sell coins to another person, who sends money to your card. The rate can be attractive, but the risk is higher. The buyer may be a scammer, and the payment itself may raise questions at your bank.
A crypto wallet with card withdrawal. Your coins sit in a wallet, and the same wallet lets you convert them and withdraw to a Mastercard or Visa card. It is the shortest route, with no buyer to find and no exchange account to fund.
What to check before you withdraw
Most withdrawal problems come from small details. Before your first transaction, check five things:
- The coin and the network. The same coin can run on different networks. If the networks do not match, the transfer can be lost.
- The minimum amount. Every service has a minimum withdrawal. An amount below it will not go through.
- All the fees. Add up the network fee, the exchange fee and the card withdrawal fee. A good rate can disappear behind a high fee.
- Verification. Services that work with cards check your identity. Get verified in advance, not when you urgently need the money.
- The card. Make sure the card is active and accepts incoming transfers.
How to withdraw crypto to a card with SharPay
SharPay is a wallet that keeps crypto, a regular account and payment cards in one place. Here is how crypto to card works:
- Register on the SharPay website or in the app with your email, phone number and a confirmation code.
- Pass verification. You need a passport scan and a form in English. The check usually takes 5 to 15 minutes.
- Open the crypto wallet. On the main page of your account, click the “+” above the transaction panel and select the wallet.
- Fund the wallet. Send coins from another wallet or an exchange. Check the network before sending.
- Withdraw to your card. USDC can be withdrawn to a Mastercard or Visa card. In other words, you top up a regular bank card with crypto.
For more on the wallet itself, read how to create a crypto wallet.
Bitcoin and other coins
Besides USDC, the wallet supports BTC, ETH, DAI, LTC, XRP and TUSD. The price list shows direct card withdrawal for USDC. Other coins do not need to be sold elsewhere. You can convert them to fiat inside the app in a few taps.
After conversion, you can pay contactless with Apple Pay or Google Pay. Any store or service that accepts these payments will work.
What it costs
Prices come from the SharPay price list:
- Withdrawing USDC to a Mastercard or Visa card: 3%, minimum 30 USDC.
- Depositing USDC with a Mastercard or Visa card: 4%.
- Sending USDC to an external crypto wallet: network fee only.
- BTC, ETH and other coins: network fee for deposits and withdrawals, with a minimum per coin. For example, withdrawals start at 0.001 BTC or 0.005 ETH.
Check the price list before a large withdrawal, as the figures can change.
Common mistakes when you cash out
- The wrong network. Coins are sent on a network the receiving wallet does not support. Getting them back can be hard or impossible.
- An amount below the minimum. The transfer fails, and you have to add more coins and pay the network fee again.
- Trading with strangers. In P2P deals, scammers often ask you to “confirm” a payment with a code or to send coins first.
- Last-minute verification. If your documents are not ready, the withdrawal waits.
